Social listening and competitor analysis tools, compared
There is no single best social listening tool, because the tools do different jobs. Some are enterprise research suites, some are publishing suites with listening attached, some are mention feeds, and a few do the analysis for you. Below is a fair comparison of the nine we are most often compared with, what each is best for and what it costs. We make Scolto, so we have said plainly where another tool is the better fit.
The short version
| Tool | Best for | Who does the analysis | Pricing |

Prices are as published by each vendor or as commonly reported by buyers, checked in October 2026. Enterprise prices vary widely by contract.
How to choose
- Who will operate it? Enterprise suites assume trained analysts writing queries and reading dashboards. If you do not have that team, pick a tool that delivers the answer.
- Is it listening or analysis you need? A mention feed tells you that people talked. Analysis tells you what it means for you, and what to do next.
- Do you need your competitors, or just your brand? Brand monitoring watches your name. Competitor analysis needs their posts, the comments under them, their ads and their reviews.
- Do you need publishing too? If scheduling and answering messages is the main job, a publishing suite with listening attached is the right buy.
- Can you start without a sales call? Self-serve tools let you test on a real question this week instead of after procurement.
Enterprise suites: Brandwatch, Sprinklr, Talkwalker
These are the deepest tools in the category: years of historical data, huge source coverage, fine-grained query languages, and the compliance and security programs large companies need. They are built for teams with analysts to run them, and priced accordingly, behind a sales process. Sprinklr goes furthest, selling listening as one module of a full customer-experience suite with care, publishing and advertising. Talkwalker became part of Hootsuite in 2024 and now powers Hootsuite's enterprise listening. Choose one of these if you have an insights team and the budget, and the breadth matters more than speed. Our Brandwatch alternative and Sprinklr alternative pages cover when they are and are not worth it.
Publishing suites with listening: Sprout Social, Hootsuite
If your main job is running your own channels, these are the right tools, and their listening is convenient because it sits next to your publishing. The catch is that listening is usually priced as an add-on or a higher tier on top of per-seat plans, so a team that mainly wants research pays for a suite to get it. See our Sprout Social alternative page.
Media monitoring: Meltwater, Mention
Built for PR and comms: they watch news sites, blogs and the wider web alongside social, which matters if press coverage is part of your job. Both are sold on annual contracts. Mention retired its self-serve plans in 2025, so it no longer serves solo marketers. See our Mention alternative page.
Affordable monitoring and benchmarking: Brand24, Socialinsider
Brand24 is the affordable mention feed: self-serve, a free trial, priced by keyword. Socialinsider benchmarks account metrics - followers, engagement rates, posting cadence - against competitors, and does it well. Both leave the interpretation to you. See our Brand24 alternative page for Brand24 pricing and how it compares with Mention and Hootsuite.
AI visibility tools
A newer category tracks what ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI answers say about your brand. SEO suites have added it to their rank data, and dedicated tools track prompts and report a visibility score. Scolto tracks AI answers too, on ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, and reads them next to the social conversation the answers are built from. See AI visibility tracking.
Where Scolto fits
Scolto is for teams that need the analysis, not another tool to operate. You brief an AI analyst in plain language; it watches your competitors' posts and the comments under them on Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, X, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn, their ads on Meta and Google, their app reviews, the news, and what ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI say about them (see AI visibility tracking), and delivers insights and reports to Slack, WhatsApp, email or the app, with every claim linked to its source. It is self-serve from $49 a month.

What is the best social listening tool?
It depends on the job. Brandwatch, Talkwalker and Sprinklr suit enterprise research teams; Sprout Social and Hootsuite suit teams that mainly publish; Meltwater and Mention suit PR teams; Brand24 suits small budgets. Scolto suits teams that want the competitor and market analysis done for them.
What are the best Sprinklr alternatives?
For enterprise listening without the full CX suite, Brandwatch or Talkwalker. For publishing plus listening, Sprout Social or Hootsuite. For a self-serve tool that does the analysis, Scolto, from $49/month.
What is the best social media competitor analysis tool?
For benchmarking account metrics, Socialinsider. For reading what competitors post, how their audience reacts, what ads they run and what their app reviews say, with the analysis written for you, Scolto.
Is there a cheap alternative to Brandwatch?
Brand24 starts at $199/month billed annually for mention monitoring. Scolto starts at $49/month, monthly, and includes the analysis. Neither has Brandwatch's historical archive or query depth.
What is the difference between social listening and social media monitoring?
Monitoring collects mentions and alerts you to them. Listening analyzes them for themes, sentiment and meaning. Social intelligence goes one step further: it answers a business question - who is winning, why, what to do - from that evidence.
